One of the questions that I get asked most as a Pastor, is how to know the direction that your life should take.
One of the answers that I frequently give is to look for signposts along the way. These are pointers that may not mean much at the time, but are valuable indicators as your life unfolds.
I remember not long after passing my driving test, that I drove down an unfamiliar busy road, only to find that I was driving the wrong way down a one way street; I had missed the signs whilst trying to focus on my driving.
Signs are pretty obvious when you look for them, but often we are so preoccupied with looking for the right road to take, that we fail to spot the signs to help us along the way.
Our youngest son Caleb recently passed his driving test, but the one he failed before that, saw him travelling too slowly in a 60mph stretch of road, simply because he was so focused on the road and not on the signs.
The God that is revealed to us in the Bible, is a God that speaks, directs, communicates and wants to connect with ordinary people like you and I.
I never did very well at school, but sitting in one of my final exams, I was strangely aware of ‘outside’ help when writing the essay for my English literature paper. I had never ever been a writer and yet on this day of all days, it was if my pen was being directed by the hand of God as words flowed like never before.
The results confirmed a few weeks later that I truly had been helped, as it was the only exam that I received the very highest mark achievable.
All these years later, I now look back and realise that that experience was a powerful signpost as to how God might want me to be used in the future, in that I would need to know that a fairly uneducated teenager, could and would actually spend much of his time writing as part of his destiny.
I would have never have believed that when called upon by God to write my first book years later, that I would need to trust that God would hold my pen as I sat down to write hour after hour.
Today, over 2000 people will be reading Fresh Hope which requires several hours of my time (and others) writing inspirationally each week.
The seemingly insignificant signpost in my exam many years ago, was there to give me a glimpse of my future.
Don’t get so preoccupied with the road, or the journey – simply ask the Holy Spirit to show you the signs along the way.
Psalm 37:23-24 The Lord makes firm [orders]the steps of the one who delights in him; though he may stumble, he will not fall, for the Lord upholds him with his hand.
A daily devotion for a better way of living.
