Fresh Hope – 31st May 2016

Imagine you’re back at school in the playground.

‘Heavy Eddie’ the school bully, has singled you out and is after your dinner money!

Seemingly with no hope, you spot Mr Jenkins the PE teacher on duty.

Do you…

1. Run to him and tell tales on Eddie? (The problem is of course that Eddie may get you after school).

2. Or do you just ask if you can stay near to him? You’re safe near to the teacher!

This picture helps us understand what King David was saying in Psalm 27 Though an army besiege me,my heart will not fear; though war break out against me, even then I will be confident. One thing I ask from the Lord, this only do I seek:

King David shows us his playground situation. An army besieges him and war is breaking out against him. Remember, he isn’t being metaphoric, he was a king of a nation regularly at war. So what will he ask? Surely he will tell tales on his enemies and ask that they may be struck down? No, he asks this: ‘that I may dwell in the house of the Lord all the days of my life. For in the day of trouble, he will keep me safe in his dwelling.’

He’s approaching the teacher and instead of telling tales of woe he simply asks ‘can I remain in your presence?’ because then in the day of trouble when ‘Heavy Eddie’ is after him, he will be kept safe.

There is a way to live that means we’re not always dictated to by our circumstances. If circumstances being resolved are necessary for our happiness, we will always be up and down!

When we learn to realise God is sufficient and cares for us, we too like King David can reel off a list of problems and say ‘even then I will be confident!’

If you’re feeling crushed by needs and situations today, make a choice. Approach God and ask ‘one thing’ this only do I seek… not that my needs are met, but that I may have the peace that comes from knowing I’m in the presence of God and He will protect and lift me above the circumstances of life.

You will have troubles in this world but take heart, He has overcome the world!
