WD-40 is a household name.
For as long as I can remember, it’s been the blue can with the little red pipe for every rusty occasion. A creaking door hinge, a seized-up lock or a bicycle wheel that needs to run more freely…WD-40 is the answer to a thousand and one problems.
Just last week, I was getting frustrated as I was sure that I had a can of the stuff somewhere, but it just could not be found. It’s just one of those items that every home needs to have in stock at all times.
I don’t think I would be too far out by saying that a man doesn’t feel a real man without his trusty can; but have you ever considered the story behind that little can of WD-40?
WD-40 literally stands for ‘Water Displacement 40th attempt’.
That’s the name straight out of the lab book used by the chemist who created it in 1953.
The chemist, Norman Larsen, was attempting to concoct a formula to prevent corrosion, a goal that is achieved by displacing water. Eventually, his persistence paid off when he finally perfected the formula on the 40th try.
