Someone once said “for everything you want to gain, you have to give up something.”
This is a very true saying.
For instance, if you want to gain a new body, you have to give up cake.
If you want to experience a new holiday destination, you may have to give up your annual trip to Rhyl.
To embrace something new, you have to let something go and if you don’t let go of what is holding you back, you’ll never move forward.
You may say “but I like the familiar, I like to feel comfortable”. That’s great, as long as you don’t want to progress.
Life changes, times change, fashion changes, people change and seasons change, so our best hope is to stay flexible.
We have to be willing to let go of something, in order to embrace something new.
I read some time ago about a lady who was holding a hot cup of tea. She said “my nephew came bounding towards me, I knew he wanted a hug, he was coming at me fast. I knew he would get scalded with the tea that I was holding in both hands. In that moment, I quickly gave up the tea and gave a hug. What I was hanging on to was not wrong, it was tea, but to experience what was coming I had to let it go.”
When you let go of what is in your hands, an exchange will take place. And only when you let go will you get the exchange.
God wants us to be open to new opportunities, enlarge our lives, expand our vision, increase our influence – but we won’t do any of that, if we’re too scared to let go.
A daily devotion for a better way of living.
