One of the most famous characters in all the Bible is Jonah. You may be familiar with his encounter with a whale, but what happens previous to that is a lesson for us all to learn.
God asks Jonah to travel to the city of Nineveh and address the people there, however Jonah doesn’t want this assignment and so decides to get on a boat that’s heading in the opposite direction. Following this, a great storm comes upon the boat and death is inevitable for all who are on board.
When it becomes evident that Jonah is responsible for this storm, the sailors come to the conclusion that the only solution is to throw him overboard. They do so, and the raging winds and waves become calm.
Sometimes the storms that you go through in life are not your fault, but they are as a result of the people that you’ve allowed into your boat. You may currently be facing the consequences of someone else’s disobedience, and this can all be avoided by making the decision to throw some people overboard.
Yes, it is our responsibility to love all people, yes, it is our responsibility to show grace and forgiveness towards everybody, but you were never called to allow everyone into your boat.
I want you to notice how each person on that boat had a destination, and the same is for you today – you have a destiny. However, no one would have made it to where they were going if they hadn’t have made the choice to lose someone along the journey.
You need to come to the realisation that your destiny is too precious and that the call of God upon your life is too great for you to have the wrong people in your boat…
Jonah’s gotta go.
A daily devotion for a better way of living.
