Recently whilst helping to clear out a loft, I came across a china bowl.
It turned out to be what’s called ‘Nanking cargo’ china recovered from the wreckage of a Dutch cargo ship that had sank in the South China Sea in 1752 and was famously salvaged in 1984.
For 232 years it lay perfectly preserved under the sea before being recovered and sold at auction at Christie’s where the current owner had purchased it, it still showed the Christie’s badge and lot number.
This must be priceless you would think? Unfortunately no, for the simple reason that around 50,000 identical bowls had also survived from that wreckage.
You can get other china that’s chipped, tainted, not as old and doesn’t have the same amazing back story, but is worth immeasurably more for one simple reason. They’re a one off from a famous maker.
Guess where this is going?
You are, as you read this today, a ‘one off’ from a famous world renowned maker. You are priceless. You may be imperfect, chipped, not the most elegant to look at, you may not have the greatest back story etc… but you are a one off and so valuable that God gave His only Son to buy you at auction.
I hope your self esteem is rising as you read this, your self-worth should be going through the roof.
Romans 8:31 What, then, shall we say in response to these things? If God is for us, who can be against us? He who did not spare his own Son, but gave him up for us all—how will he not also, along with him, graciously give us all things?
What can we say other than ‘thank you Jesus!’ He’s done it, it’s over, the auction hammer has gone down and he’s paid up in full. There’s nothing we can add other than to believe and work out what it means in the day to day of life to have been truly saved from the depths. Let’s work that out together.
A daily devotion for a better way of living.
