Fresh Hope – 12th April 2017

One of the greatest questions of all time, would have to be along the lines of this one…’what do I have to do to do the work that God requires?’

The answer to that comes in many different forms, dependent on your belief system. Here are a few common responses…

Do more religious things

Help more people

Give more money

Serve in a community project

Pray more

The list really has no end to it.

All of these are usually very commendable things and would certainly never be frowned upon , yet we have a problem, in that Jesus never said that any of those things qualify for a correct response to such a huge question.

For centuries, people have felt that good works are the answer to this, yet that answer doesn’t even come close.

Here is what Jesus said in response to being asked this exact question by a group of individuals…

John 6:28-29 Then they asked him, ‘What must we do to do the works God requires?’ Jesus answered, ‘The work of God is this: to believe in the one he has sent.’

That’s it?! YES, the work that God requires is to BELIEVE.

Praying, serving, giving, loving and all other things come as a result of just one thing, and that is, BELIEVING.

Believing on and in the name of Jesus, is to do the very work that God requires and must come before all other things.

God made it so simple that everyone can do it.

At this very special time of Easter, I pray that you would come to a realisation that no amount of good works can earn you God’s love, in fact it’s impossible to receive this free gift by trying to ‘pay’ for it.

As we contemplate the death, burial and resurrection of Jesus Christ this coming weekend, ask yourself one simple question: do I believe?

That initial step of faith and trust in all that Jesus HAS done is what God is looking for, and is the very work that He requires.

All others things find their true meaning after this, but never before it.

Believe today and receive today.
