When God asks you to do something extraordinary, it’s because He wants to do something extraordinary.
Several years ago, I was preparing to travel to a church on the south coast of England where I had been invited to speak at a midweek service. A day or so beforehand I heard the Holy spirit speak clearly to me these words…”whatever they give you when they take up an offering for you is not to be touched by you. It’s for that couple you know that has no money. Send it straight to them. Do not touch it yourself.”
It was very clear what I had to do, and if I’m honest I thought it was a very simple thing for me to do. After all, the church was pretty small and I knew that anything they gave me would probably just cover the fuel to get there and back.
“No big deal”… I kind of said back to God, inside my head.
The evening at the church went well and as I was leaving I was given an envelope with the largest amount of cash that I’d ever received for speaking. I looked down and saw a total written on the outside of the enevelope…£350! ‘Oh drat’, I thought as I was trying to sound grateful. I had needs myself back at home and now I’m about to send the whole amount to a couple I hardly know. Part of me was mildly annoyed, but every bit of me knew that this was a step of obedience that I had to take.
As I got in the car to leave, the pastor hurriedly handed me a further envelope and gave me strict orders from the person that had given it to him. “This must not be given away…it’s yours.”
It was just after midnight when I got home and in a cynical and tired manner I began to think about sending the largest gift ever in the post the next morning. I found myself musing over the other envelope and began to think about what was potentially in there. A gift of maybe £10 or even £20, but whatever it is, it’s probably not even going to be anywhere near what I’m just about to give away. I admit, I was completely down sizing God’s ability to meet my needs after taking such a chunk of money off me when I most needed it for my own family.
You can imagine my surprise, not to mention my remorse for thinking such thoughts, when I found myself staring at a cheque for £2000!
When God asks you to sow the seed you have, He’s setting you up for a harvest that’s on its way to you.
Don’t be afraid today to obey God, nor should you be afraid to give him everything you have. He knows exactly what He’s doing. Never doubt it – just do it.
Luke 6:38 Give, and it will be given to you. A good measure, pressed down, shaken together and running over, will be poured into your lap. For with the measure you use, it will be measured to you.’
A daily devotion for a better way of living.
