In the book of Matthew, found in the New Testament of the Bible, we see Jesus asking His disciples a question… ‘Who do people say that I am?’
His disciples respond by saying, ‘Some say you’re John the Baptist, others say Elijah, and still others, one of the prophets.’
Then Jesus poses an all-important further question. ‘But what about you?’ He asks. ‘Who do you say that I am?’ At this, Peter, one of the disciples steps forward and says, ‘You are the Messiah, the Son of the living God.’
I then want us to see what happens next… Jesus responds to Peter and says, ‘And I tell you that you are Peter, and on this rock I will build my church…’
What’s amazing to me about this story is that we find Peter confessing with his mouth exactly who Jesus is. Then two verses later, we see Jesus confess with His mouth exactly who Peter is.
You see, whenever you verbalise who Jesus is, you get a revelation of who you are.
When you begin to confess that He is your saviour, when you begin to confess that He is your healer and that He is your provider, you realise that your identity is not found in your circumstance, or in what people say about you, it’s found in what God says about you!
Never again do you have to experience an identity crisis, but you can know today who you truly are – a son or a daughter of the most high God.
A daily devotion for a better way of living.
