Galatians 5:22-23, ‘But the fruit of the Spirit is love, joy, peace, patience, kindness, goodness, faithfulness, gentleness and self-control…’

I used to always think this scripture was just sweet and lovely. I have recently come to understand that the fruits of the Spirit aren’t just these pleasant things we try and produce as Christians. The fruits of the Spirit are POWERFUL.

One thing is for sure, fruit cannot be forced out. So often we can find ourselves stressing over producing the fruit. Question: have you ever seen a tree forcing fruit out? I think not! Fruit is an effortless product of a tree that is grounded in the right conditions. When the source of the tree is well nurtured, the product is naturally fruit!

How are we as Christians any different? We can’t beat ourselves up until we manifest joy or guilt ourselves into being more self-controlled. Sure, it may work for a bit, but it isn’t sustainable. The fruit of God is a product of the Holy Spirit, not a fruit of me! As I submit to Holy Spirit, the fruit is a natural occurrence.

Too many of us, try too hard, too often, to become righteous FOR God, but it is actually Jesus who made us righteous and the Holy Spirit that brings it into fruition. He is at work IN us.

The Holy Spirit is the ultimate counselor, refresher, strengthener, teacher and comforter – so what is the fruit of submitting to good counseling, guiding, teaching and comforting? A life of love, joy, peace, patience, kindness, goodness and self-control!

Christianity is far more than a self-improvement and self-behaviour modification program. Christianity is about heart transformation through the work of Holy Spirit, which then produces tasty fruit!

We live in a world that is CRAVING the fruit of love, joy, peace, patience, kindness, goodness, faithfulness, gentleness and self-control and as these are produced in your life, people will come to taste!
