Fresh Hope – 23rd August 2018

You cannot recognise a lie, until you know the truth. This is why we should always be feeding on the word of God. It is very hard to partner (agree) with a lie about yourself or God, when the word/truth of God is deep in your heart. Likewise, it is very easy to believe a lie, when you don’t know the truth.

Whilst we are often comfortable around the idea of the unconditional love of God, we must never forget that God is also truth. You cannot have truth without love, and love without truth. As Timothy Keller says, ‘Love without truth is sentimentality; it supports and affirms us but keeps us in denial about our flaws. Truth without love is harshness; it gives us information but in such a way that we cannot really hear it’. Like we are open to the love of God, we should also be receptive to the TRUTH of God. After all, ‘the truth will set you free’ (John 8:32), and who doesn’t want to be free?

Truth being revealed to us can look like a friend or family member kindly revealing something in our character that needs to be dealt with. It can be opening the word of God, and being challenged. It can be finally repenting for not listening to truth, and believing a lie that the enemy has been whispering to you for years.

One of my favourite qualities in my husband is the uncompromising stance he has on truth telling. He prefers honesty over anything else. He has no tolerance for lies. I believe the nature of God is the same. He is passionate about you not believing the lies of the enemy. God desires for us to be ever free – and it is the word of God that cuts the chains of deception.

Knowing truth is the most powerful weapon we have. Ephesians 6:14 says, ‘Stand firm then, with the belt of truth buckled around your waist’. When Paul is talking here about the Christian being ready for battle, he is emphasising the importance of truth being part of our armour. Why is truth represented as a belt? Because the belt of a Roman soldier in Paul’s day was not a weak fake-leather strap such as we wear today. It was a thick, heavy leather and metal band that offered protection. The belt held the soldier’s sword and other weapons. The belt of truth of the spiritual armour holds the sword of the Spirit, linking truth and the Word of God. The Word of God is truth, and truth protects you and it fights for you!

Let us be truth seekers, and truth speakers, and we will be the most free people on the planet.

Psalm 25:5  “Guide me in your truth and teach me, for you are God my Savior, and my hope is in you all day long.”
