Avoid assuming the motives of others! Avoid assuming what people are thinking and how they feel about you!
The Bible says that we ourselves don’t always understand our heart (1 Corinthians 2:11), so how much more do we not understand the motives of others?
When the Bible tells us not to judge others, this does not mean that we can’t show discernment. There are different types of judgment.
Jesus encourages us to be truth seekers and discern what is right from wrong, but it is the judgment by mere appearances that Jesus tells us to stop. “Stop judging by mere appearances, but instead judge correctly” (John 7:24).
The Bible tells us that passing judgement without fact, honest conversation and healthy communication is superficial judgement and frankly foolish (Proverbs 18:13). Superficial judgement isn’t just assuming the worst about someone based on looks or sinful behaviour, superficial judgement includes assuming people’s motives and thoughts towards you.
To walk around assuming people’s feelings and motives is draining and judgemental behaviour. Assume the best of people and you will find you have a lot more room to love others, and to be loved in return!
