A tower stands tall in a city. It overshadows neighbouring buildings, offering protection in its structure, advantage in its height, and strength in its stature.
Proverbs 18:10 says, ‘The character of God is a tower of strength, for the lovers of God delight to run into his heart and be exalted on high’.
In a tsunami, where do people run? To higher ground. People seek refuge in towers. When waves of trouble rush into your life, where is your higher ground? Your safer place?
Proverbs calls us to find our higher place, our safer place, and our strong place, in the name of the Lord. The name of the Lord represents the character of God. The character of God is his unfailing, ever-present and perfect nature of which we can totally trust.
Simply saying and believing:
Lord, You are a God of love – so I find refuge in your love.
Lord, You are a God of mercy – so I find refuge in your mercy.
Lord, You are a God of strength – so I find refuge in your strength.
Lord, You are a God of righteousness – so I find refuge in your righteousness.
…is moving to higher ground.
When a flood is closing in, you don’t meander to higher ground you RUN! When an animal is being hunted, they don’t cruise on back to their hiding place, they RUN!
When our troubles close in, don’t meander around complaint, depression, and negativity… RUN to the character and heart of God in order to find your safety!
God provides a wonderful and strong defence. This is rooted not in a magical saying of His name as if it were some kind of charm, but in the name of the LORD as a declaration of His character – all that He is and all that He stands for, Yahweh (the LORD) is a strong tower.
Whoever calls upon the name of the Lord shall be saved! (Joel 2:32, Acts 2:21, and Romans 10:13).
A daily devotion for a better way of living.
