Fresh Hope – 21st June 2019

Information information! As commented by the American psychiatrist Edward Hallowell, “never in human history, our brains had to work so much information as today. We have now a generation of people who spend many hours in front of a computer monitor or a mobile phone and who are so busy in processing the information received from all directions, so they lose the ability to think and feel”. Apparently we’re now exposed to more data in a single day than someone in the 15th century would be in their entire lifetime.

What types of messages do we allow to enter our homes on a daily basis through television, social media, internet magazines smartphones or even our own conversations? Do we take time to really ponder and evaluate the ideas that we absorb even subconsciously?

The effect is that all this information we absorb goes into our sub-conscience and affects the way we think, view things or even behave in the long run.  Therefore we must be intentional and selective of what we take in.  Choose carefully the words and images that enter your home and your heart. The ears and eyes serve as a gateway to your heart.

There is an African Proverb that says: ‘if the ears don’t hear the mind will not be bitter.’   It is very important as God’s children we mind what we pay attention to. Jesus warned us to be careful of what we hear and take heed of His Word more, for there is a reward, and this reward is wisdom.

Mark 4:23-24 says “If any man has ears to hear, let him be listening and let him perceive and comprehend.  He said to them, “be careful what you are hearing. The measure of thought and study you give to the truth you hear will be the measure of virtue and knowledge that comes back to you—and more will be given to you who hear”.

Therefore there is the need to give our ears to things that are profitable to our lives. We must give our ears to productive words that will produce great fruit in our lives. Let the messages in your home be messages of hope, love, peace…  Let your loved ones see and hear the words of life and truth above those of sin and death.   The Holy Spirit is your greatest ally when determining what is healthy for your spirit, He will prompt you if you allow Him to.
