Vitamin D is essential for our bodies to function properly, it helps us create calcium to form and strengthen our bones. However, vitamin D is something that we have to get from our daily diet and from sunlight, we don’t make it within our bodies. Without sufficient vitamin D, our bones get weaker and it can lead to conditions like rickets. Thankfully, just getting a few minutes of sunlight on your skin every day is usually enough.
The grace of God is very much like vitamin D.
There is nothing we can do to earn the grace of God, we can’t ‘manufacture’ it ourselves, no matter how hard we work. It is a free gift, nothing that we can do, think or say will change God’s grace towards us. It is free to us but comes at a great price to God, the price was paid by Jesus on the cross. It is free but certainly not cheap.
To stay spiritually ‘healthy’ we need a dose of God’s grace every day. Thankfully we are told that firstly, God’s grace ‘is sufficient for you’ (2 Corinthians 12:9) in order to stand strong against the trials and tribulations of this life. Secondly, that it is new and fresh every morning (Lamentations 3, 22-23). Every day we start with a clean slate and a new ‘dose’ of His mercy and grace.
We rely on God’s grace. As Paul says in 2 Corinthians 12:9 ‘My grace is sufficient for you, my power is made perfect in weakness’. Through his grace our human weaknesses are not important, God can use us to do amazing things despite our weakness (Philippians 4:13). But apart from His grace we can do nothing.
Just as sunlight is a gift of God’s creation, so His grace is a gift of God’s love – we need them both to be healthy.
A daily devotion for a better way of living.
