Here’s some load lightening encouraging words for us all: we have all thoroughly, comprehensively, exceedingly failed and come up short and always will when it comes to being right with God.
Romans 3:23| NIV
for all have sinned and fall short of the glory of God!
Romans 6:23 | NIV
For the wages of sin is death!
It can seem unfair that there’s nothing we can do about the fact that we are born into sin as a result of the curse from Adam! How is it fair his actions thousands of years ago meant that sin entered the world and no matter how hard you try you fall short of the glory of God?
But then the great news is that the opposite is also true. Just as all are cursed by Adam all are set free by Jesus.
Romans 3:24 ‘and all are justified freely by his grace through the redemption that came by Christ Jesus.’
Romans 6:23 ‘but the gift of God is eternal life in Christ Jesus our Lord.’
The biggest trap we can fall into as Christians is religion that seems to suggest that we can and should achieve some kind of acceptance of our own merit once we are saved and that we do gain some kind of self-righteousness.
It’s not true! We will always 100% need to completely rely upon his grace.
In Galatians 3, Paul starts off with the strong words ‘you foolish Galatians!’ Then goes onto explain, in verse 2 and 3…
‘2 I would like to learn just one thing from you: Did you receive the Spirit by the works of the law, or by believing what you heard? 3 Are you so foolish? After beginning by means of the Spirit, are you now trying to finish by means of the flesh?’
What Paul is telling us here is that what Christ has begun he will finish! We can’t finish what he begun but just as we’re saved by grace through faith so we must live in grace by faith! Read this today and don’t feel a failure because you’re still not perfect, but accept his grace that is all sufficient and that you are a beautiful work in progress!
A daily devotion for a better way of living.
