It was a defining moment when Joshua said to Israel, ‘…choose for yourselves …as for me and my house, we will serve the Lord’ (Joshua 24v15)
First, in our lives, defining moments usually come as a surprise and happen during a time of crisis. The crisis that we are facing right now is likely to be one of them. There will be other times too, like times of personal failure, taking an unpopular stand, suffering without complaining, being asked to forgive or making a hard choice. Sometimes, defining moments occur when we don’t see them for what they are. It’s only afterwards, as we look back, that we understand their importance. Either way, they define who we are.
Secondly, defining moments show others who we are. During these times we will let go of any pretence and let our guard down, revealing the real me. Our image means nothing, neither does our connections, or any type of spin that we put on something to make us appear better than we really are. Whatever is truly going on inside us is revealed to everyone. If you’re a leader, defining moments tell the people following you who you really are, what you stand for, and why you’re leading.
Thirdly, defining moments determine who we will become. You’ll never be the same person after a defining moment. That’s because defining moments aren’t normal or usual, and what is normal doesn’t work in these times. Defining moments are like a crossroads in our lives, they give us the opportunity to turn, change direction, and seek a new destination. They present options and opportunities. In these moments, we must choose. The choice we make will define us.
Be careful in these unusual and uncertain times that you make the right choices — they will define your life either for the better or for the worse.
A daily devotion for a better way of living.
