Could there be a more challenging scripture for today than that of 1 Thessalonians 5:16-18?
‘Rejoice always, pray without ceasing, give thanks in all circumstances; for this is the will of God in Christ Jesus for you’.
1. REJOICE ALWAYS – Not just when things are going well. Have great joy and delight ALWAYS.
2. PRAY WITHOUT CEASING – That means praying non-stop!
3. GIVE THANKS IN ALL CIRCUMSTANCES – When your circumstances aren’t your preferred circumstances, thank Him through it.
These are incredibly uncomfortable and confronting scriptures for many of us.
Was Paul, the author, totally out of touch with the realities of life and hardship? No. Quite the opposite. He went through more trials than many of us probably ever will (2 Corinthians 11-25).
Many of us want to know what the will of God for our lives is. Well, here is it: rejoice always, pray non-stop, give thanks always. There is the place to start. ‘For this is the will of God for you’.
We can rejoice always because our joy is not tied up in circumstance. It is tied up in the cross. We can pray non-stop because prayer is not and should not be exclusive to an occasion or an event. Prayer is all day, every day, constant communication and relationship with God. We can give thanks no matter the situation because through Jesus we ALWAYS have something to be thankful for.
These actions may seem idealistic, impossible or even ridiculous, but perhaps that is exactly why they are in fact the most powerful weapons you could use right now.
In the words of a true worshipper, David in Psalm 34:1, ‘I will bless the LORD AT ALL TIMES; His praise shall CONTINUALLY be in my mouth’.
Rejoice, pray, give thanks, repeat!
A daily devotion for a better way of living.
