A key element of the Christmas season is the gift giving! Christian or not Christian, exchanging gifts is easily one of, if not, THE biggest aspect of the Christmas season (just ask the retail industry).
Yet behind the generous exchange of giving someone a gift, is something deeper. We’ve heard it all before. ‘The real gift is Jesus’. As cliché as this is, I hope we can understand the truth of the statement once more.
Jesus was not birthed on earth for a cute nativity scene. Jesus’ birth came with a mission and a mandate – to save the world. Jesus was birthed for His death – our death – the death of our despair, hopelessness, fear, sickness, eternal suffering, disconnection from God, and poverty.
If Jesus Himself was not the greatest gift of all, God continues to gift us in our lives as Christians. He left us the gift of the Holy Spirit (John 14:15-31), He left us Spiritual gifts (1 Corinthians 12), and He encourages us to ASK for gifts as we go about life (Matthew 7:11, James 1:5)!
Generosity always has been and always will be at the centre of our Father’s heart. That is why we give gifts – an ultimate reminder that we were given the highest gift from our heavenly father, and that gift keeps on giving!
A daily devotion for a better way of living.
