Do you have something burning inside of you? Do you have a fire in you? Maybe you once did, but now it just feels like smoke.
A good way to see what fire God has put in you is to ask yourself these questions:
What makes me feel alive?
What am I most passionate about?
How was I before the grind of life wore down on me?
The answers to these questions are the parts of you that you should be working hard to protect. When you let job pressures, expectations, or monotony of life take away from these things, you are not protecting your fire!
Paul talked to Timothy about this very thing.
‘I’m writing to encourage you to fan into flame and rekindle the fire’ (2 Timothy 1:5). Other translations say, ‘Stir up the gift of God which is in you’. To stir up is the idea of actively keeping a fire burning bright and strong. The Greek meaning of the words, ‘stir up’, anazopureo, means either ‘to kindle afresh’ or ‘to keep in full flame’. These are active descriptions, not passive. It takes careful intentionality to protect the fire in your heart!
In the natural, there are three elements that are necessary for a fire to keep burning; heat, oxygen, and fuel. As soon as one of these elements are removed, the fire dies.
Spiritually speaking, our inner fires operate in the same way.
We need to add heat to our heart. A fire left to itself will burn out. A heart left to itself will die. Nothing heats things up like the Holy Spirit! As you actively partner with him, he will keep your fire burning bright!
Oxygen. You need air to keep your heart’s fire alive! Remove the lid and allow your heart some breathing space! Guarding your heart doesn’t necessarily mean blocking it off. In fact for most people, it means opening it up! Stop keeping it closed off! Open it up to the right people – people who will fan your sparks into flames.
Lastly, your heart needs fuel. If you are going to get your inner fire going, then you need to feed with the right stuff, or it will dwindle out. Find things that set your passions, and who you really are alight. Be intentional about this, for this is what it means to protect the fire placed in you!
Proverbs 4:23 “Above all else, guard your heart, for everything you do flows from it.”
A daily devotion for a better way of living.
