Last year in a Moscow airport there was a tragic accident when an Aeroflot Russian plane made an emergency landing having just taken off. Before all passengers could be evacuated, the jet burst into flames killing 41 of 78 passengers on board.
One survivor, Mikhail Savchenko said he didn’t know what to make of his fellow passengers actions when it was found that some of the 37 survivors had held up the evacuation of the plane by first getting their luggage from overhead storage.
He said “I do not know what to say about people who ran out with bags, God is their judge. But I really want to ask them not to persecute them, I am sure that it is very hard for them now.”
“I do not think that at least one person in this burning hell coolly and deliberately dragged suitcases.
“I do not know how the psyche works in such situations, [that is] a question for the experts.”
It’s uncomfortable reading, how is it possible that we as humans could choose to grab luggage, keep hold of personal possession at the expense of another’s life? Who could possibly do that and how could you live with yourself after? I feel this is a real challenge to all of us who are followers of Jesus but aren’t prepared to submit every area of life to him.
The reality is, we live out our lives as if on an aeroplane that will eventually be evacuated. And it’s vital that during the flight the passengers come to know the reason for the flight, to put their HOPE in Jesus Christ! But the challenge to us is this…is our personal possession (our luggage, the baggage we carry on a daily basis) the number one thing in our lives or is it getting people off the plane safely?
Are we carrying things around in our lives today we really should get rid of; maybe areas of sin we are struggling in, maybe hurt you just can’t forgive or maybe you’re just not prepared to trust God with your finances and refuse to trust Him in your giving?
I plead with you today, let go of your luggage, write it off, forgive, repent! Our destination has everything we could hope for already prepared, there is no need for us to take anything other than as many passengers as possible!
At Champions Church, on the 26th – 29th March there will be four amazing nights of hope, where people will get to hear about the life changing HOPE that is a relationship with Jesus! I encourage you today, pray for the passengers in your life and invite them to join you in March for a life changing night!
Hebrews 12:1-2 | NIV
Therefore, since we are surrounded by such a great cloud of witnesses, let us throw off everything that hinders and the sin that so easily entangles. And let us run with perseverance the race marked out for us, fixing our eyes on Jesus, the pioneer and perfecter of faith.
A daily devotion for a better way of living.
