Fresh Hope – 17th April 2020

In this unusual time of isolation, our routine can be lost and our minds can start to play tricks, paranoia can set in and we can start to wonder if anyone misses us. I’m sure we all agree, when you hear someone say ‘I don’t care what people think’ what they really are saying is, ‘I really care what people think but I wish I didn’t.’

In reality, what we think people think of us transforms how we feel about ourselves. What’s also true, and not helpful, is the saying ‘familiarity breeds contempt’. This often means the people closest to us, those who know us the best, the good and the bad, whose opinions we actually care most about, can make us feel less valued about ourselves.

If your self worth is based on what people think of you, (even your most loved ones) you’re in trouble. But here’s some great news, God doesn’t judge, act or think like the world does, and God thinks incredibly highly of each one of us!

Firstly, He gave his only son as a sacrifice to reconcile us back to him. Something is only worth what someone is willing to pay for it, that means your actual worth is that of God himself! Think about it? You are truly priceless. Let your ego go through the roof.

Secondly, as it says in John 1:12 ‘to those who believed in his name, he gave the right to become children of God’. He thinks of you as his child. This is true, familiarity breeds contempt, except when it comes to children. Marriage is very conditional. You make an effort to maintain and nurture it, you only have to forget an anniversary to realise how conditional marriage is. Children on the other hand, have our unconditional affections! There is no ‘familiarity breeding contempt’, only love upon love. And no matter what you have messed up, God sees you as His child with unconditional acceptance and love!

Thirdly, however you may feel about how you look, you are created in the very image of God as it reads in Genesis 1:26 Then God said, “Let us make mankind in our image, in our likeness”. You are literally God’s gift to mankind. You may want to make changes to how you look, but God doesn’t, He created you and knitted you together in your mother’s womb, he’s intimate with our innermost being and thoughts. He desires to be in a relationship with you.

However you are feeling about yourself today, in whatever kind of isolation you may be experiencing, know that God’s thoughts are always on you; He couldn’t value you more highly, you are the pinnacle of His creation and He desires to know you deeper. Seek Him today.
