Fresh Hope – 21st April 2020

There’s a story that I love in Matthew’s gospel, found in the New Testament of The Bible, where Jesus describes two types of people – one wise and the other one foolish.

The wise man had built his house on a rock, the foolish man had built his house on sand. One day a storm arose and beat against both houses; you guessed it, causing the house with its foundation on the rock to withstand the storm, and causing the house with its foundation on the sand to come crashing down.

I want us to notice how both houses experienced a storm. Neither one was exempt. And although neither were exempt, both were exposed.
You see, none of us will go through life without facing ‘storms.’ In fact, we’re all in one right now, and the structures of our lives are being tested. What a storm will do to us all is reveal our foundations. It will expose what our lives are being built on.

By telling this story, I guess Jesus was wanting to pose a question to us: ‘What is your life being built on?’ Is it being built on temporary things, is it being built on unstable foundations, or is it being built on something sure and solid?

My friend, that sure and solid foundation being spoken of here is Jesus. He is the rock on which you can build your life. He loves you, He is for you, and He wants to make Himself available to you today.

He doesn’t promise you a problem-free life. A life without difficulty, challenges or storms, but rather His message to you is, ‘if you’ll build your life on me, we can withstand the storms of life together, and more than that, we can thrive in this life together.’

Do you feel as though your life is shaking? Have you been building a life for yourself only to realise the foundation is all wrong? Jesus Christ is the Rock and let me assure you, you can put your trust in Him.
